Guiding principles for culturally safe genomics

Ensuring Culturally Safe Health Genomics with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples - Guiding Principles (‘the Guiding Principles’), have been developed by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Group on Health Genomics. They provide guidance for health genomics clinical and research organisations to support improvements in the quality of care and health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

As acknowledged in the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Plan 2021–2031:

“For genomics to be responsive for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, it must be person-centred. This means understanding and respecting the specific factors that relate to history, culture, equality and benefit in the context of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.”

The Guiding Principles aim to ensure that genomics in Australia is culturally safe, equitable and led by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
