Building a dedicated engagement mechanism
Consistent with the National Agreement on Closing the Gap Priority Reform One, Genomics Australia will develop a formal engagement mechanism with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This mechanism will ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices and knowledge shape how genomics is integrated into health, research and policy.
Genomics Australia will work in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and organisations to design and implement the mechanism, ensuring it captures community perspectives and informs culturally safe approaches to genomics.
The mechanism aims to support genuine partnership and self-determination to enable equitable access to services and research. It will also help Genomics Australia understand community priorities, values and expectations, ensuring that policies and projects are responsive and respectful.
